Ionrift Respite

An Add-on Module for Foundry Virtual Tabletop

Author: IonRift Project: Source Foundry Versions 12+ (Verified 13) Last Updated 3 days, 20 hours ago

Structured long rests for DnD 5e.

Long rests have a bottleneck - the GM has to manage each request one by one or cut things short to keep the session moving.

The GM is easily overloaded, and forced to break out of character to manage rest logistics one player at a time - this problem most tables solve by skipping many parts...

Respite replaces the default rest dialog with a phased flow - players pick their own activities and handle their own downtime.

Bookkeeping that can eat the better part of an hour gets handled by the module, freeing the table up to focus on RP and banter.

How it works

  1. Setup - GM picks terrain, weather, shelter. The module calculates an encounter DC and shows the breakdown.
  2. Activities - each player picks what they're doing. Keep watch, Focus on rest, or specialist options like Attune, Identify and Copy Spell.
  3. Events - GM rolls against the encounter threshold. Events pull from terrain-specific pools or suggests a combat outcome with surprise and initiative influences.
  4. Resolution - HP/HD recovery based on comfort level. Each player is presented with the full results of their rest privately.

There's a tension between guarding the camp and getting rest. Someone on watch is more prepared if combat breaks out but might recover less or miss other activites. Someone resting fully recovers better but wakes up groggy if a fight breaks out. Sleeping in armor avoids the scramble to gear up but costs recovery (optional Xanathar's rules). These tradeoffs are shown to the player with buttons to make their decisions so the GM doesn't have to explain or manage them.

Activities

Players pick from a grid of activites. Most activities are fully self-serve; Copy Spell still needs the GM to add the final spell to the players spell book but the DC roll and gold deduction is managed in a UI flow.

Events

30+ hand-written events across 6 terrains (forest, desert, swamp, urban, dungeon, tavern), collected over years of running a primitive version of this module at the table. Events have tiers, weighted probability, and narrative branching. The GM can Force Pass/Fail any outcome.

Meals

Rations phase with drag-and-drop food and water

Players can 'self serve' their own meals... if you'll forgive the pun

When meal tracking is enabled, drag rations from inventory to fill plates. Missing meals trigger CON saves. Exhaustion stacks following the standard 5e variant rules.
