Title: Church of the Light
Introduction
Discover a country church devoted to a sun deity, standing watch over sun-blasted terrain and scattered trees. By day, the Church of the Light welcomes travelers and the faithful into its warm, sunlit halls; by night, lanterns kindle around its grounds to hold back the dark. But beneath its floorboards lies a secret its own congregation guards closely: a hidden refuge, reachable only through a clergy’s hatch, a spike-warded cave mouth, or a palisaded crypt entrance built to keep ghouls and graverobbers alike at bay. Spanning three distinct levels—the church and its grounds, a workshop floor built around a sunlight-channeling apparatus, and the hidden world below—this map offers a peaceful surface concealing genuine depth, perfect for quest hubs that turn into investigations, sieges, or rescues.
Map Breakdown & Key Areas:
The Church Building:
The spiritual heart of the map, built around worship of the sun.
-
Entrance Hallways: A pair of pillared hallways frame the approach into the church, leading the faithful toward the worship area beyond.
-
The Worship Area: The congregation’s hall, laid out so the light channeled from above can fall directly upon those gathered.
-
The Priest’s Office: A private study behind the worship area, with a staircase leading up to the church’s workshop level.
The Church Grounds:
Four structures surround the church, each serving the small community that maintains it.
-
Custodian & Historian’s House (Northwest): Home to whoever keeps the church’s records, and its grounds, in order. This also contains a hatch way that leads into the refuge.
-
The Living Quarters (Southwest): A comfortable home with a well-worn living area, kept for one of the church’s residents.
-
The Cookhouse (Northeast): A dedicated building for preparing meals for the community.
-
The Crypt Palisade (Southeast): A ring of sharpened wooden stakes guarding the formal crypt entrance, built specifically to keep ghouls and graverobbers from prying it open.
The Upper Church:
Above the worship area, the church’s workshop level hides its most striking feature.
-
The Light-Catching Apparatus: A huge mechanism built to catch the sun at certain times of day and channel it down into the worship area below, bathing the devoted in the sun’s healing light.
-
Workshops & Storage: Rooms given over to the upkeep of the church and the apparatus itself, arranged around the machinery.
The Hidden Refuge:
A secret underground level, reachable by three very different routes.
-
The Hatch: A concealed, clergy-only route down from the north west building.
-
The Cave Entrance: A natural opening warded with a mass of sharpened spikes to keep ghouls from finding their way in.
-
The Crypt & Hidden Chamber: A proper entrance south of the church leads into the crypt, which conceals a hidden side chamber to the northeast.
-
The Refuges (Northwest): Quiet hiding spots stocked to give people a safe place to rest when they need to disappear.
GM Tools & Technical Details:
-
Three-Floor Vertical Design: This map spans three distinct levels—the church and its grounds, the workshop floor, and the hidden refuge—giving GMs room to run encounters where verticality and secrecy matter as much as combat.
-
Three Independent Entrances: The hidden refuge below can be reached via a clergy-only hatch, a spike-warded cave mouth, or a palisaded crypt entrance, each with its own risk profile for players trying to reach it unnoticed—or defend it.
-
Dynamic Day/Night Lighting: Lanterns around the church grounds light automatically after dark, shifting the map’s mood and visibility between day and night sessions.
Suggested Uses:
-
Sanctuary in Need: A group fleeing persecution needs somewhere to disappear, and the church’s hidden refuge is the only place left willing to take them in—if the party can get them there without being seen.
-
The Ghoul Incursion: Something has breached the spikes guarding the cave entrance. The party is hired to hold the line, or to hunt down whatever got through before it reaches the crypt—or the refuges beyond it.
-
Grave Robbers at the Gate: A gang has set their sights on whatever the crypt protects, and they’re not above tearing down a palisade of sharpened wood to get it.
-
The Insider’s Route: The only quiet way into the refuge is a hatch known solely to the clergy. The party will need to earn a priest’s trust—or relieve them of their keys—to use it.
-
The Sunless Ritual: Someone has tampered with the light-catching apparatus, and the worship area hasn’t seen its healing light in days. Mechanical fault, or sabotage timed for a ceremony that depends on it?
