Song of Heroic Lands: A Gateway to Adventure
Play the character you actually imagined.
Song of Heroic Lands is a classless, skill-based fantasy system for Foundry Virtual Tabletop. No classes, no levels, no archetypes to choose between — you decide what your character knows, believes, and can do, and the system builds them from that. The grizzled sergeant who reads the stars, the physician with smuggler friends, the shepherd who speaks to spirits: here those are ordinary characters, not multiclass workarounds.
It is a world with weight. Fights are fast and genuinely dangerous, so choosing to draw steel is a real decision rather than a foregone conclusion. Wounds stay with you and need treating. And when the dice turn against you, Fate can still buy you a way out.
Features
Character
- Be anyone. Describe the character in your head and the system builds them. Breadth and specialisation are equally viable, and no concept needs a workaround.
- Your aptitudes come from who you are. Every skill draws its starting ability from the attributes that genuinely govern it, so a strong, clumsy character is good at different things than a quick, frail one before you've made a single choice.
- Get good at what you actually do. Skills improve because you used them in play, not because you banked points into them. You finish a campaign shaped by what happened to you.
- Standing you can trade on. Affiliations track your rank and relationship with an order, a faith, or a guild — who vouches for you, and how far that goes.
The Unseen World
- Magic you build a character around, not a spell list you shop from. Arcane, Divine, and Spirit traditions — alchemy, runecraft, astrology, tarotry, summoning, trance, spirit work — that play nothing alike.
- Some power is what you are; some is what you do. A birthsign or a state of piety quietly colours everything you attempt. A rite, a prayer, or an invocation is something you perform and roll for. Most traditions mix the two, so a star-reader and a spirit-talker feel genuinely different to play.
Danger
- Fights are decisions, not arithmetic. Combat is fast and lethal enough that drawing steel is a real choice, and walking away is a legitimate one.
- Wounds land somewhere, and they stay. A wound hits a specific part of the body, carries an aspect and a severity, bleeds, can turn septic, impairs the limb it landed on, needs treating by someone competent, and heals on its own schedule.
- Fear, fatigue, and morale are modelled too. Your character can be exhausted, terrified, or broken — not merely injured.
- Fate, for the day you should have died. A tracked resource you spend to lift a result or walk away from something that ought to have finished you. Grit without the arbitrary ending.
At the Table
- Nothing happens to your character without your say-so. The system offers; you accept. No other player can impose an outcome on your character, and the automated path is never the only path.
- Every number shows its work. See exactly which bonus, penalty, or wound produced a total. No mystery modifiers, no arguing with a black box.
- Time passes and the world remembers. An in-world calendar tracks your healing, your afflictions, and anything you've scheduled, and reminds you when it comes due — without acting for you.
- Bring your own world. HârnMaster, the open-source Thalorna setting, or something entirely yours. Hundreds of creatures, weapons, and armour come ready to drag onto a sheet, alongside a full rules reference you can read without leaving Foundry.
