Hexlands is a hex map generator and editor. Generate entire regions in seconds, then refine them with an intuitive editing tool.
1.2.0 Update:
Procedural Generator:
Create massive, unique hex maps with a single click. The engine uses layered noise maps to produce realistic terrain with natural elevation, water, and vegetation distribution. Every map is different and unique.
10 Distinct Biomes:
Generate maps across 10 different biome styles, from Frozen tundras and Boreal forests to Jungles, Deserts, Volcanic regions, and corrupted Tainted lands. Each biome has its own terrain logic and visual identity, so the same map settings can produce very different kinds of worlds.
Map Archetypes:
Generate very different kinds of regions depending on the campaign you want to run. Hexlands supports mainland maps, mountain ranges, basins, islands, archipelagos, and a crescent island style.
Coasts, Shapes, and Scale:
Add coastlines to one or more sides of land maps, or build full island-style layouts. Generate maps in rectangular, hexagonal, circular, square, or icosahedral-style shapes, with flexible size controls for anything from small regions to large overland areas.
Terrain and Seed Control:
You have two ways to work with the generator:
- New Seed: Press Randomize to create a completely different world.
- Apply Changes: Adjust Water Level, Mountain Density, Vegetation Density, biome, and other settings while keeping the same underlying geography. This makes it easy to iterate toward the exact map you want.
Rivers:
Hexlands can generate rivers automatically as part of the map creation process. Rivers usually begin in mountain areas and flow toward lakes, coastlines, or other water features. You can use them to create more believable travel routes, borders, and regional landmarks.
The Hex Editor:
Need to tweak a generated map or build one from scratch? The Editor lets you paint individual hexes directly onto the canvas. Select a biome and a tile variant, then drag to paint. The tool automatically cycles through tile variations to keep the map looking natural and hand-crafted. Rivers are not locked in after generation. Extend them, reshape them, or delete sections directly in the editor, so you can combine procedural generation with manual control.
Human Art:
Hexlands ships with a hex tile set by David Baumgart, featuring hex tiles with 3-4 visual variations per terrain type.
Foundry Integration:
- Lightweight Performance: All hexes are placed as native Foundry Tile assets, ensuring smooth performance even for maps with hundreds of tiles.
- Fog of War and Vision: Hexlands automatically configures scene vision and fog of war settings. Drop a token onto the map, and it will reveal the surrounding hexes as your players explore. Perfect for classic hex-crawl gameplay.
- Automatic Scene Configuration: The module handles scene resizing, grid alignment (6 miles per hex by default), and tile placement automatically.
- Dedicated Tool Controls: Access the Generator, Editor, and Inspector from the Augur Tools control group on the left toolbar.
Ideal For:
Hex-Crawl Campaigns: Generate wilderness regions for exploration-driven. Hex-crawls come alive with procedural maps and built-in fog of war.
Worldbuilders: Rapidly prototype continents and regional maps. Use the generator for the broad strokes, then paint in the details with the editor.
Game Masters: Spend less time drawing maps and more time running your game. Generate a map in seconds when your players go off the beaten path.
Solo Players: Pair Hexlands with your favorite oracle or solo engine for procedural exploration.
Use the Generator to create the base geography of your world, then switch to the Editor to add unique landmarks. A volcanic peak in the middle of a frozen tundra, a hidden oasis inside a desert, or a tainted forest spreading across temperate hills.
