Norman castles, most famously the motte-and-bailey design, emerged during the 11th century following the Norman conquest of England. They were built primarily for defense and control, serving as both military fortresses and administrative centers.
Environmental and Thematic Elements:
• Atmosphere: Norman castles often have a grim, imposing feel, with their thick walls and narrow windows. This can be used to create a sense of claustrophobia, especially in dark hallways or underground passages.
• Architecture: Emphasize the architectural elements—portcullises that slam down, spiral staircases that turn clockwise (favoring right-handed defenders), and murder holes in the gatehouse.
• Historical Flavor: Incorporate medieval life aspects, like the feudal system, oaths of loyalty, and the harsh realities of medieval warfare and justice.
