Step right up! The Honk Legion is a mini-expansion for The Crooked Moon, designed as a short, modular adventure that can be run as a thematic side story or as a standalone experience. It expands the realm of Druskenvald—specifically the district known as Crazy Clown Hell in the capital of Picco, Funtopia (see The Crooked Moon, pp. 43–45). It includes twelve keyed locations, major and minor NPCs, optional objectives, monsters, magic items, and a central choice: convince the park’s four Honk Legion stewards to abandon Chookels-Chookels—or join him forever.
While the core adventure of The Crooked Moon presents a long-form Folk Horror campaign, The Honk Legion allows the Game Master (GM) to explore the humor, shock, and absurdity that evoke the themes of Picco while still complementing the broader setting. Ownership of The Crooked Moon is recommended but not required.
The Crooked Moon is a Folk Horror tome of isolation, dread, and tragic consequences. The Honk Legion shares an undercurrent of unease and fear, but veers toward humor. Players may find themselves both laughing and recoiling as comedic moments abruptly give way to real danger. Despite the absurdity, the stakes are real—the clowns are not mere performers but agents of the unnatural order imposed by Chookels-Chookels and their commitment to the Honk Legion. As the GM, you bring this warped world to life.
As a One-Shot Adventure. If you plan to run The Honk Legion in a single session, aim for four to six non-combat encounters, two streamlined combat encounters, and the finale with Chookels-Chookels. Keep character creation simple and focus on decisions over exploration. Not every location must be visited.
As Part of a Larger Campaign. When integrated into a larger campaign, this adventure works best as a bizarre interlude. In The Crooked Moon, it fits between the Crimson Monastery (chapter 14) and the Drowned Crossroads (chapter 15) with no level adjustment needed. See "Quest Honks, er, Hooks" for how the characters might enter Honkemonium Park.
Is the Honk Legion Right for My Campaign? If you’re playing The Crooked Moon adventure campaign (or a similar story) as seriously as a heart attack, perhaps not. This story showcases a comedic, spooky horror that can spoil hard-earned dread and tension. Be careful not to let any air out of the balloon (heh).
