Atheron: A Campaign Setting
Three kingdoms. Forty-two years of peace built on suspicion, pragmatism, and the shared memory of what happened the last time it broke.
In Grimfall, the kingdom of faith and steel, criminals are thrown into a coliseum and forced to fight for their lives before thousands. Justice is rendered by the gods, or so the people believe. What they don't know is that the skeletal executioner who appears when the Black Stone is drawn is a bone devil, bound by a secret pact that every High Arbiter must accept to take office.
In Duskveil, the kingdom of mages, necromancy is legal, but the cultural scars of the Winter Privations run so deep that practicing it draws suspicion and hostility. Graveyard caretakers watch their plots with the vigilance of armed guards. A spellcaster caught animating a corpse in public faces no court, only contempt.
In Velgrada, the merchant kingdom that grew rich while the others bled, the ruins of a monastery sit just east of the city. Buried inside is evidence that Velgrada's own royal family funded the assassination that started the war, a secret that, if uncovered, could shatter the fragile peace between all three kingdoms.
And beneath all of it: the Veil. The boundary between realities. When beings of immense power clash, reality tears open and mana scars form, wounds that bleed magical energy, spawn aberrations, and suppress mortal potential across the entire continent.
